A select group of students each year will have the opportunity to work toward a joint M.A. degree in Journalism and Latin American and Caribbean Studies, French Studies, Near Eastern Studies, Russian and Slavic Studies, International Relations (official application is now available), and Africana Studies. Joint Journalism programs with other emphases are in development. Ask about these by contacting global.journalism@nyu.edu.
In addition, there is a concentration in Journalism for M.A. candidates in Religious Studies and a joint degree program with the Department of Biology.
On the Journalism side of these partnerships, the students come together as a unit, known as "GloJo," or Global and Joint Program Studies, for a two-year course of study. The group crosses the disciplines and remains intentionally small, in the manner of all of NYU's graduate Journalism fields of study.
GloJo is designed for students with strong international interests and, as appropriate, the needed language preparation. The program provides students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of each respective region or culture in a traditional academic sense. At the same time, it prepares them to research, report, and write from abroad or domestically on themes of international importance — but always with a wide but sophisticated readership in mind.
From the very start of the program, GloJo students take their required reporting classes together, to ensure that the class retains its international inflection. They also meet regularly outside of class several times a semester in informal dinner workshops expressly conceived to support the master's projects they work on throughout the course of their studies. The project, generally researched and reported in the first year of the program and written in the second, results in a substantive long-form journalistic work in narrative, explanatory or investigative style, under-girded with academic references.
Prospective students are invited to visit the Institute during the fall and spring academic terms to learn more about the program. We can arrange for you to sit in on a class and suggest you check Course Listings for what might coincide with your visit. To schedule a visit, please contact graduate.journalism@nyu.edu. Please note that visits should be scheduled well in advance if you wish to meet with faculty.
Please note the recommended deadline for all applications is December 18.
