Soon seats on private jets will be bookable much as any seat on a commercial airline currently is. Executive Jet Management Inc. will soon be offering seats on two US routes the Wall Street Journal reported last week.
Apparently there is a speed appeal to this proposition, as flying on private jets is faster than traveling on commercial planes, even in first class. Presumably because you’re not delayed by the riff-raff slowly boarding the rear of the plane or your baggage winding its way from aircraft to the reclaim area.
But despite this speed appeal and the on-board luxury that would no doubt engulf you , this customer proposition is not convincing.
Private jets are supposed to be all about being in control of one’s destiny – flying when and where one wants. In this model however, customers have little more control over flight times, paths or frequency than they would flying with a commercial airline, but additionally don’t have the flexibility the latter offers through the volume or variety of flights.
It will be interesting to watch this ventures take-off.
A major benefit of private jet transport is that the planes generally use smaller commuter airports that don't require 2 hours of pre-boarding time. I know that if I had the money to slap down on a private jet ticket, the two hours saved before my flight and the one hour saved afterward would be the main utility gained from the experience.
